DIY Spray-Tan Setup at Home — Equipment, PPE, and Solutions Guide
How to set up a DIY spray-tan station at home
For experienced home users who want salon-grade results without going to a salon. If you're new to sunless tanning, our Sunless Tanning Mousse is the simpler at-home route — apply with a mitt, no equipment needed.
1. Equipment checklist
- HVLP spray gun or airbrush gun — HVLP is the standard for full-body spray tanning. Look for 4–6 PSI rating, low-overspray nozzle.
- Compressor — required for airbrush; optional but helpful for HVLP.
- Pop-up spray-tan tent — keeps overspray off your walls and ventilates the workspace. Non-negotiable.
- 1 L Body Botanicals Solution — pick your DHA level (see below). One bottle = ~18–20 full-body applications.
- Drop cloth or tarp — protect your floor under the tent.
- Disposable shower cap — keep DHA out of your scalp.
Don't already have a gun + tent?
The Body Botanicals Sunless Tanning System bundles an HVLP gun + pop-up tent + 2 Solutions — built specifically to atomize our Solutions correctly out of the box.
2. Required PPE
DHA has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety on mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth). Pro spray-tan techs mitigate this every session. You should too.
- Goggles or eye shield — protect your eyes from overspray
- Nose filter or N95-style mask — keep DHA out of your respiratory tract
- Lip balm — physical barrier for your lips
- Hair cap — keep DHA out of your scalp/hairline
- Disposable underwear or a swimsuit you don't mind staining — DHA can leave a brown residue on light-colored fabric
3. Where to set up
The ideal home spray-tan space is:
- Well-ventilated (open window or door, fan running)
- Easy to clean (tile or sealed concrete floor, not carpet)
- Out of the path of normal foot traffic for 30 minutes after spraying
Most home users set up in a garage, basement, or bathroom. The pop-up tent contains the overspray, so you don't need a dedicated room.
4. Choosing your Solution level
Body Botanicals Solutions come in three DHA strengths. Same botanical formula across all three; the DHA percentage drives color depth.
5. Application — step by step
- Prep the day before: exfoliate fully. Skip lotion, oil, or deodorant on application day.
- Set up tent + drop cloth. Have your gun loaded and PPE within reach.
- PPE on. Goggles, nose filter, lip balm, hair cap.
- Test spray on a piece of paper — confirm even atomization, no spitting.
- Hold gun 8–10 inches from skin. Spray in even, overlapping passes — top to bottom, one body section at a time. Two light coats beats one heavy coat.
- Dry down 60–90 seconds before moving or dressing.
- Dress in loose, dark clothing. No tight bands, leggings, or bras for the next 4 hours.
- Wait 4 hours minimum before water/sweat. Color develops over 4–6 hours total.
- First rinse: cool water, no soap, just rinse off the cosmetic guide bronzer. Pat dry.
- Aftercare: moisturize daily, short lukewarm showers, pat dry. Avoid chlorine and long hot baths for 24 hours.
6. Common mistakes to avoid
- Spraying too close. Drips and dark patches. Stay 8–10 inches back.
- Skipping PPE. DHA in your eyes/nose isn't worth saving five minutes.
- Using a pump or refill bottle. The formula is built for spray-gun atomization. Pump bottles will streak — use the Mousse instead if that's your preferred method.
- Skipping exfoliation. Tan grabs to dry, dead skin and patches.
- Applying lotion before. Creates a barrier — color won't bond evenly.
- Showering too early. Less than 4 hours = washed-out, uneven color.
Don't want the equipment? You have options.
Setting up a station isn't for everyone. The Sunless Tanning Mousse is the at-home consumer version — same botanical formula, designed for pump bottle + tanning mitt application. Faster, simpler, no equipment, no PPE needed.
